2 with ten – the letter g

ok, before we start i think a quick recap of the 2 with ten rules is in order. in a perfect world i would like u to post no more than 2 artists from the letter in question. ideally these bands are found within your own personal itunes library. i would prefer more recent artists but again that’s tough given the limits of the library in question. (if there isnt much to choose from in your library this might be a reminder to stay current and not get complacent with your music.). now post one song link from each artist be it a youtube or myspace link. that’s it. pretty simple. if you want to list just one band/link and ask a question then do that as it will take this blog to even stranger places.

gbgrizzly bear. gb is an indie band from ny that debuted in 04. they are my first g but it’s not because of their most recent and popular record veckatimest that everyone seems to think is so amazing. it’s actually because of their second record yellow house which i think is much better. yellow house came out on warp records in 06. i think that as a whole, from start to finish, it’s a very complete record – it flows extremely well with warm, dreamy, psychedelic, folky, unique and timeless elements to all of it. i don’t even remember how i got this record but i think i got it from amy. the track i picked was called knife.

gabingabin. this was an easy choice for a few reasons. i discovered gabin when we were signed to astralwerks as they were fellow labelmates…but from italy. gabin is the elctro lounge duo of fillippo cary and max bottini. they are both great musicians with a defined style- bottini happens to be a well known jazz bassist in his own right. so here’s the story, before i took a trip to rome in 04 i had my a&r guy get me in touch with their manager. i set up a time to meet with them at their studio and played them our then unreleased debut cd off of a little digital camera that i had it on. they immediately took a liking to the song hollywood and eventually remixed the track. to date it’s one of the most radically interpreted remixes we have ever had made. this track still gets played on chillout stations and appears on our first remix ep which is actually tough to find in print.

My G’s are pretty sparse for whatever reason, so I’m going with one obvious choice and one older one.
Gus Gus: you already mentioned them in the F’s, so no surprise here. There was a period where it seemed like you couldn’t get a DJ mix tape without one of their songs. I’ve always liked their more downtempo music, especially the slightly pervy “Teenage Sensation”.

    .
Game Theory: they were a college-radio fave in the late 80′s. For whatever reason, they hit my sweet spot at the time. I think it had something to do with their really cute guitar player – she had this giant head of teased bleach-blonde hair, so hot at the time (http://donnettethayer.homestead.com/files/pictures/donnette_eth_mesg.jpg). The music is a little dated now.

Happy New Year there Fran. OK, so here we go with the “G”s. I got a lovely 160 gig iPod for Xmas from my missus which I’ve been filling up with basically every CD I own. I’ve uploaded 400+ so far and nary a dent in my capacity yet. Beautiful. The consequence is that I’ve now got LOADS of stuff to draw from.
    .
Groove Armada – “Superstylin’” – Having lived in London for six years gave me an ear for the electronica goodness. Catchy little number this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KABmnF2T6M
    .
Guided By Voices – “Motor Away” – Man, these guys have like, a bazillion albums, some of which are full of head scratchin’ weirdness and some contain awesome little gems like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meshV00_Jns

    Enjoy!

    #1 Gary Numan:
Ok this guy has a 20 year history and was a real pioneer in electronic music so it is hard to choose. In an attempt to keep things current, here is Halo off of “Jagged” from 2006 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG57MyicowU
I hear he is due to release something new, and has some collaborations in the works. I’m not a great music historian or anything, so can’t really do reviews justice… but wow, this guy just keeps innovating.

#2 Gang Gang Dance First Communion off of Saint Dymphna – 2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0VePHmc7iE
I like the balance between the kinda noisy/experimental electronica sound, and the more traditional instrumentation.. I don’t usually review music so it is difficult for me to explain why I like what I like, but this band for me is like whacking open a musical pinata.. you know basically what you are gonna get… but its still a surprise. =)

Do I get a question too? Have you heard the Grizzly Bear/Feist collaboration “Service Bell”? Wait that was 2 questions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3RJw7FfHKs Just thought I’d mention since everyone was big on Feist in F’s.

Gordon Voidwell — ok, it could be a “V” but let’s call it a “G” as in Get on the Good foot. Start with PAYBACK (no, it’s not a JB cover) and get random from there for p-funk smoothies and crispy electro soul-pops fresh from the blender.

The Grates – Aw Yeah … This song is about as addictive as they come, at least for me… It inspired me to name a recent mix-tape “One Foot In The Grave”, and this song closes the mix. Plus it has a pretty sweet video taboot@

For “G” I’m bringing back my Graham Collier recommendation (originally under “C,” not knowing we were going by first names), newly spiffed up and with links. After preparing this contribution I watched your “F” video, in which you stated that you are not a big jazz fan. I’ve gone through jazz eras and non-jazz eras, and yes, it’s a matter of time and place for me too. So I’ll post this one for anyone who might be interested, and who knows, you might like it. As always, there will be more newer artists and albums in future posts. Expect the unexpected!
    ***
“Deep Dark Blue Centre” is a British 1967 release from The Graham Collier Septet that, to the best of my knowledge, marks the first major album appearance by drummer John Marshall and woodwind/keyboard man Karl Jenkins. Both of these musicians later went on to Nucleus and Soft Machine, and Marshall also played on the first two solo albums Jack Bruce recorded after Cream split up. Collier is the double bass player and primary composer, and the rest of the Septet consists of drums, guitar, horns, and reeds. On several tracks the music has the feel of chamber jazz, especially when the trumpet, trombone, and reeds are playing without the rhythm section. The last two tracks (Conversations and the title number) feature some fast-paced sections reminiscent of the music of jazz composer Charles Mingus. Post-Soft Machine, John Marshall joined Eberhard Weber’s group (as detailed in my “E” contribution) and Karl Jenkins immersed himself in the world of classical-lite; he is best known for his Adiemus albums and concerts. It is interesting to listen to these two musicians honing their chops on “Deep Dark Blue Centre.” You might feel like you are listening to fussy arrangements without a core (that was my first impression), but the music could grow on you, as it has with me; you will eventually capture the heart and soul beneath the charts. Besides, where else will you hear jazz oboe? Here are some links: The Graham Collier Music page, with a link to a 13-minute audio montage: http://www.grahamcolliermusic.com/ *** The Deep Dark Blue Centre page, where you can listen to one complete track (Conversations): http://www.grahamcolliermusic.com/recordings/page32/page32.html *** Graham Collier’s Jazz Continuum page; no musical links but lots of cool brainy stuff to read (not now, just whenever): http://www.jazzcontinuum.com/.

For a recent band, I’d suggest Gaslight Anthem. Energy, punk/pop edge, great lyrics. Lots of good songs on their album “The ’59 Sound,” but I’d pick “High Lonesome” as one standout: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ran45D_B7i0

Second, I’m going to ignore the recent band recommendation and put out Graham Parker, a great, underappreciated singer and songwriter from the late 70′s and 80′s. Lots of songs to choose from again. Let’s go with “Protection”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3ETAZSFWWs

  12. ILIFF #
    12

To start off for the Letter G, my first recommendation is the band Garbage. I know this is kinda mainstream, but in my opinion, they’re too good of a band to be ignored. I’ve seen this band several times live and they never disappoint. The band is full of some incredible musicians, most notably drummer Butch Vig, who produced the album “Nevermind” for Nirvana, and their incredible singer Shirley Manson. To me, Shirley remains one of the most talented, sexy and charismatic frontwomen in music today. As of right now, the band is on hiatus, but there has been talk about them entering the studio to record their 5th album and possibly doing a tour of unplugged performances. I for one, really hope that happens. My first link for Garbage has always been one of my favorites of theirs, the sexy and intense “Hammering In My Head”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btt-FGjUk_4&fmt=18 and the next link is for the classic Garbage tune, “Only Happy When It Rains”, which I never seem to get tired of. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DC-P0Ze5pPQ&fmt=18.

My next band for “G” has already been recommended by djpj, the Aussie pop-punk band The Grates. Since I don’t have another “G” band right now, I’ll toss another song of theirs in the mix… their song “Science Is Golden” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecuC8Iumd2A&fmt=18 I got into this band a few years ago thru an Aussie friend of mine. They’re predominantly known for their catchy songs and their energetic live shows. Their music is somewhat reminiscent of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and to me, the guitar work reminds me of the 80s band Darling Buds. They’re lots of fun though.

  13. 13

Gui Borrato: Brazilian electronic music wonder boy. there is some depth to his electro jams, here’s “Beautiful Life” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajWPpl2sDl0

Goldfrapp: a very diverse catalog, I’ve been a fan from day 1 – Fran i think even you will like this track, it’s catchy & dreamy, here’s “Happiness”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So93Iny2HWI

hmmmmm.. ok.. “G”… I’m gonna have to agree with Panterarosa with Goldfrap for sure and ILIFF for sure with Garbage.. nice choices and now it’s harder for me to narrow down ;)
I’m going to go with Great White and Gus Gus (I’m with you Derek!!).
Unfortunately Great White’s legacy has been tarnished as of late with the night club fire and all, but there’s some quality songs earlier in their career. Since I was in High School, I was blown away by the guitar playing by Mark Kendall on the song “Rock Me” off “Once Bitten…” I can’t really find any 7min versions of it (original song length) so I’m posting a link to a live version if it @ the Ritz in NY 1988.. I caught these guys the same year in Daytona.. awesome concert…. (at least when your 16 ;) )

I know it’s been posted already above but I’m going to have to go with Gus Gus also. This band has popped up here and there during my musical adventures and has ALWAYS impressed, surprised, and changed me in some way or another… A great track by them is a song called “Is Jesus Your Pal” (albeit slow, but INCREDIBLE Vocals by Emiliana Torrini):

Ok, for the G’s. Continuing with the rabbit theme from last week, Gram Rabbit ( http://www.myspace.com/gramrabbit ). To further beat the rabbit into the ground, try the song Bloody Bunnies :) Shiny Monster is also a great psychadelic dance tune.

Next up I got The Gossip ( http://www.myspace.com/gossipband ), a punk/soul band based in Portland, OR. Of the songs on their myspace, I like Heavy Cross and Dimestore Diamond.

Hey Fran…Bonne Année! Wouldn’t mind being in some SoCal weather right now. And hey, keep May 22nd open…I’m coming back to San Diego to partner up with my buddy and throw an annual event.

Giant Drag – Lots of good songs but I tend to lean towards the song “Slayer” in most of my playlists. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38DRaXhaIEU

Gogol Bordello – Gypsy-Punk…these guys are great live, lots of fun…and the singer’s fearless. In a place the Casbah in San Diego they make the most of that space. Check out “Start Wearing Purple”

I’m super pissed because I missed out on a few great letters of band’s that I really wanted to dive into and introduce to hopefully a few people,

    Ok for “G”

    “The GO! Team”

A friend of mine introduced these guys to me a little while back and his explanation of them alone made me want to go out and buy all their records.
He said it’s one of those bands you can’t classify and once heard someone refer to it as “Super Hero Theme Music”, now I usually think bands like this are shitty hipster bullshit, but then went on to say how he put on their record and didn’t really know what to think of it, then he cleaned his house while listening to them and added “it makes you oddly pumped the entire time”

I myself am moving so I took his advice the other and put on one of their record and I have to say I never had such a happier time boxing my junk.
    Here are some videos

I mean yeah yeah yeah, they are popular but seriously we need to get it “Going On” in this blog

Thanks guys, I love contributing to this this site when I can get away work. I think its a super rad idea/project, I have already learned so much about so many bands I never would have heard of.
Now go ahead Fran, flame away at my choices and how gay they are.

Kudos for Jenna on mentioning Gary Numan… absolute legend even as he continues to evolve with his newer stuff. If you haven’t already heard “Haunted” through Jenna’s links I encourage everyone to do so!
    (FYI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8579wjzQHEk )
OK so that didn’t count as my suggestions but here they are:
    1) QUESTION: So this goes back to the timeless concept of video killed the radio star. I have noticed that up until now most of us (some exceptions noted) share our musical likes in the form of video links and not audio streams. I wonder how much the visual representation of the music influences your enjoyment/appreciation of the particular artist? In other words, for first impressions of artist that you are new/unfamiliar do you think there is a difference in your emotional response between only hearing the artist vs. watching their live performance or visual interpretation? Do you find yourself more critical of an artist when you see them perform vs. when you only hear them? Given this inquiry, do you prefer audio streams or video or it really does F-ing matter and this is a lame question ;>)
    2) Great Northern: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gfV2jNknPg or http://www.myspace.com/greatnorthern

    ciao’

  22. 22

Grizzly Bear? Really? Why not post Goo Goo Dolls or Gnarls Barkley? I really don’t get them.

I have to say, I do dig Gomez, Giant Drag (shame they haven’t produced anything in… well… quite a while now), Gus Gus, and GG Dance, I figure I’d list a few G’s in my heavy rotation, classics or current, a G’s a G.

GZA the Genius/GRANDMASTERS – always in the mix. anyone who consistently references chess gets double plays – in videos and in lyrical skills as well as music, GZA is groundbreaking and a staple in any true collection

Gilles Peterson – Known for having one of the most extensive and eclectic vinyl collections – Gilles also hosts Worldwide every week on BBC Radio. He creates his own works as well as mixes some of the best shows/cds/events i’ve ever witnessed. Check him out if you don’t know.

(Again, the large paragraphs of info in quotes are bios taken from websites)

    1) Guster
“Guster is an American alternative rock band that is known for its live performances, humor, and cult following. Guster is often recognized for its choice of instruments during their earlier years: two members playing acoustic guitars and one member playing various percussion instruments. Brian Rosenworcel, the band’s percussionist (affectionately dubbed the Thundergod by fans), added to Guster’s unique sound with a combination of bongos, cymbals, and other drums, playing live shows using only his bare hands. Guster’s sound is recognized for its vocal harmonies, with both Miller and Gardner singing lead vocals on different songs; in songs such as “What You Wish For” and “Happier,” the two members sing different lyrics simultaneously. While Guster’s studio albums included more instrumental variety (e.g. violin, bass, drum kit), its live shows generally retained the same line-up until tours supporting its album Lost and Gone Forever, in which the band diversified by playing different instruments on some songs. At this time, Rosenworcel began introducing a more traditional drum kit into the stage and studio performances in an effort to move away from bare-hand percussion. Following the release of Keep it Together, multi-instrumentalist Joe Pisapia, who had been touring with the band, became a full-time member.”

I saw Guster in concert twice (once in 2000 and again a year later) and I absolutely love this band. Back in the day, I’d heard that because the percussionist, Brian, played hand percussion throughout each show, and attacked his drums and cymbals so aggressively, he not only had to tape his hands and fingers up for performances, he actually had to ice his hands after every single show. I’ve decided to submit a classic Guster performance for you.

    2) Gabriela Anders
“Gabriela Anders was born into a family of musicians. The Argentinean native studied classical guitar and piano in Buenos Aires while listening closely to her father, jazz saxophonist Jorge Anders. “There were so many influences when I was growing up, and I wanted to do something with them all. My father’s concerts and studio work certainly affected me, as did the music of Brazil— it’s so harmonically rich and so interesting melodically.” After high school, Anders decided to continue her studies in New York. After a short while, she started to do studio and club work. This work lead to two recording projects with top producer Sergio George under the name Beleza. Through Sergio, she had the opportunity to sing for Grover Washington, Jr., Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz & DLG. Her ongoing exposure to music of various sensibilities and her innate ability to fuse styles and formats were abundantly revealed in a few demo tracks she made on the cheap. Shortly thereafter, the stunning beauty became one of the only artists ever signed to Warner Bros. from unsolicited material. Her first appearance on the Warner Bros. sampler JAZZ CHRISTMAS PARTY (1998) was followed by Gabriela’s 1999 debut, Wanting. Wanting is brimming with vocal subtlety; although smooth, it is anything but simple (she wrote ten of the twelve tracks). Gabriela Anders continued a journey of musical excellence and introspection with her releases, Eclectica, a collection of brazilian, rhythm’n blues and jazz- influenced songs and Latina, an all spanish adventure.”

Btw, Fran, I actually thought of Gabriela early on when you’d posted Astrud Gilberto. Not only because of the brazilian influence, but also because Gabriela covered “The Girl From Ipanema”. It’s a VERY different slowed-down version, but I like it. But give a listen though to the first track, “Fire Of Love”, from her ’99 CD, Wanting. If the track won’t play for you, let me know. Btw, a certain other person who posts here said to me a while back that Gabriela could sing the phone book to him and it would sound gorgeous. ;-)

That song, “Knife” (by Grizzly Bear) was VERY cool. A bit similar to psychedelic/moody sounds we’ve heard from WIG. Good stuff!

Also, I never picked up that first remix EP of WIG’s. LOVE that bossa nova-type remix of “Hollywood” by Gabin. Incredible how someone can envision an existing song in a completely different style and then bring it to life so beautifully. :)

Since Goldfrapp and Glasvegas have already been mentioned, I”m forced to introduce another one of my bands from Japan– Guniw Tools, a techno-goth-rock band from the mid to late 90′s. The singer, who goes by the name Full, is part Robert Smith, part Tim Burton but even weirder. He owns his own independent music label and creates his own videos and album covers for his various music projects. DADA is the first song and video I heard from them and made me become a fan. I saw it on a late night Japanese music show on the International Channel. Their look is a type of style used by Japanese rock bands called Visual Kei and there’s fans that get dressed up like that and parade around Tokyo. The other song is called Drop an Oar and shows their more normal side.

I know you’re not much of a hip-hop fan- Fran… but I gotta mention hip-hop pioneers Gang Starr cos they’re just dope. “Full Clip”..”Mass Appeal”..and “Skills” are my favorite. An old DJ friend of mine used to spin their records all the time way back- before iTunes was around.. haha :)

Hi Fran ! I’m back with the letter G. Good shit. I have 2… the first one i’m embarassed to admit but i love one particular song i’d hear at the bowling alley in the cosmic lites :) nonetheless…. Good Charlotte love his voice and how he pushes it. very energetic song and positive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_mhpRz0liA

My other G is for the gangsta in me….. living on hip hop for decades now… on top of my metal/ industrial other influences. G is for Geto Boys… this particular song reminds me of Ice Cube’s song Thought It was A Good Day except geto boys did their song first. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KutXyPEEbQs

I like that question from Z. There is no doubt that watching video puts images in your brain which shapes your feelings toward the music. Just look at the video for “Aw Yeah” that I posted… When ever I hear that song, I picture Patience (the lead singer) prancing around in gold spandex and getting put into a coffin. IMO just seeing what the band/singers looks like could change the way I feel about the music… If you truly want to just judge music for music, a music stream is the only way to go… Groove Shark is a site the might be our best bet for just music streams… Their catalog is huge, you do not have be a member, and you can stream any given track unlimited times (which is probably illegal, but they’re still kickin). Good question though.

Wow! I am thin on G’s.

The best G I’ve got is Gustov Holst. The Planets in its entirety is a must have. I first heard this at age 10 or 11 when my sister was in our H.S. marching band. It still sends chills down my spine. Here are two of my favorite selections:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UAZu0vF618&feature=related

Please ignore the annoying video, this video seemed to have the best sound quality.

So I was just going to leave it at Holst, but I got sucked into the youtube space time vortex and found that I’m really digging some of the more bluesier (yeah that IS a word!) GL&SS stuff. Got to love the sound of the stand up bass in someinem vids.

    cheers

I have no G’s worth mentioning…… but I loooooooooooove both of your choices, especially grizzly bear. Hate the name, but love the sound. makes my insides move. Some bands just have really dumb names.

Oops! Goldfrapp was mentioned a couple of times already wasn’t it! Well then there now! Instead let’s throw up a ….
    GRAVITY KILLS – Guilty
    http://blip.fm/~j4q38
An American industrial rock forsome that formed in 1994 out of St. Louis (Jefferson City), Missouri with a sound similar to the likes of NIN (maybe too similar). “Guilty” is off their self titled 1996 debut.

PS. I don’t believe anyone has mentioned “Gorillaz” and maybe that’s because they’re more well known to most and not as much of a discovery! But I just wanted to give them a well deserved shout because they are with out a doubt one of my most favorite G’z and take up a bulk of my G listings in my iTunes! :)

    1. The Glove “Like an Animal” also “Punish Me With Kisses”
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRsCj0YeJr4
Link is to a rare demo of R. Smith singing instead of Jeanette Landray

    2. I am going to cheat and move Serge Gainsbourg up to the “G” section. My “S’s” are overrun. “Bonnie and Clyde” with Brigitte Bardot.
