2 with ten – the letter e
when i opened itunes on both my computers i wasnt too shocked to discover how few bands i had starting with the letter e. i knew e was going to be one of those trouble letters. luckily i hit the jackpot with my first suggestion. what a relief, and to top it off, i had 3 of their records. enough said, let’s do e bitches.
Enon. enon is a trio from brooklyn that was formed by john schmersal from the band brainiac. they released their first cd believo! in 2000. it was electronic and noisy and i really liked it. i first heard this when i was a content producer for an online music site and i left a track of theirs up on the music featured section for a very long time. enon is extremely interesting largely due to the fact that after this record most of the band members changed. 2 years later the band was still a trio that featured schmersal but now included bassist/vocalist toko yasuda (ex-blonde redhead) and drummer matt schulz. the track i picked, in this city is off of the high society record released in 02. they have gotten a little less noisy on this one but it’s just as cool. enon is eclectic and rich in the musical ground they cover. discover this band.

usually my second choice is difficult because there are sooo many bands to choose from. sadly this was not the case tonight. shit…i wanted to go with something new but it was too difficult to find something. ok, this might surprise a few of you but yes…rap.
Easy-E. despite his bad rap (no pun intended) easy-e was pretty awesome before he lost all credibility when n.w.a broke up. this is the guy that brought all the members of n.w.a together and just for that he deserves a huge amount of credit. his label start up money came from selling drugs – which is pretty dope (again, no pun intended). the track i picked off his only full length titled eazy-duz-it is called eazy-er said than dunn. this has dr dre all over it..it’s heavily produced with layers of samples. it was released a month after n.w.a’s straight outta compton and it’s essentially n.w.a but with eazy front and center. i wonder what it would be like to put your name in almost every title of every song you wrote. i guess it makes song naming pretty easy (again, no pun intended).

ok, now give me your e’s.

Yeah, I thought “E” would be hard also but a quick scan of my favorites I found some gems. Resisting “Enya” and “Elvis” I’m going to have to go with Echo and the Bunnymen, and Emmylou Harris.
Echo and the Bunnymen were pretty big in the 80′s, however, I really didn’t start listening to them until recently in the last couple of years. One of my favorite movies is Donnie Darko and their song “The Killing Moon” is featured on the soundtrack. An oldie but goodie is of course “Lips Like Sugar” so I’m gonna play it safe and go with that:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZUAK61hhJo
I’m VERY unfamiliar with Emmylou Harris, but I recently caught her on a HiDef 1080P 5.1 dolby digital broadcast on PBS Over the Air with Mark Knopfler of all people. Talk about a strange mashup but Jesus, it was amazing!
Here is a link to the DVD, check it out if you can, it’s an amazing concert:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Live_Roadrunning
Here is a link to Emmylou Harris and Mark performing why worry:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G03Iw8qdBCk
Although I’m not a huge country fan (with the exception of Johnny Cash) I think you’ll enjoy her singing, she has sweet voice and is extremely talented, which is obvious and evident on her wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmylou_Harris
Yeah, the terrible “E”s. The ol’ iPod is pretty thin on these ones. Uh…Fran, what’s up with Eazy E? Well, we all have our own secret pleasures of course.
.
Anyway, here is what I managed to scrape up.
.
Egg Hunt – “Me & You” – Only one 7″ was put out by this group. It’s Ian Mackaye from Minor Threat/Embrace/Fugazi who did a little side project and this is the result. Since we’re both bass players, I assure you that you’ll dig the opening bass line if nothing else: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAGTIqm9tzw
.
The Epoxies – “Synthesized” – Sounds straight from 1983, but nope, this is a recent-ish band that wears its love of new wave firmly on its sleeve. On one level it’s cheese, but on another it’s frickin’ pop genius. Damn catchy hooks and like all good new wave songs, it comes in at under 3 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLSqHUrOXBw
.
Adios!
My “e” category is pretty bare too. But, and I file this under the category of you’ll love em or hate em, is the old Boston band Ed’s Redeeming Qualities. The main driver of this band, Dom Leone, died in 1989, after the band had recorded a few EPs but before they had done a full album. The Breeders actually recorded one of their songs, and that was the closest they got to fame of any kind. But I treasure my vinyl EP called “Ed’s Day,” even if I don’t have a turntable set up to play it at the moment.
Their best song (hit single?) is Lawn Dart: http://musicalknowledge.org/roprek/Lawn_Dart.mp3 – written and with lead vocals by Dom. There’s a homemade video from 1994 on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc1G8pMe5dk
You’ll love em or hate em. I love em.
My selections for E are Eisley and Editors. These are 2 recent finds and have been listening to both quite a bit lately. Eisley ( http://www.myspace.com/eisley ) hails from Tyler, TX and is a 5 piece alt/pop band consisting of 4 siblings and a cousin. I would imagine genetics may help a bit with the vocal harmonies of the sisters that sing. I like the songs Invasion ( http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=100006565 ) and Many Funerals. The thing I find intersting about some of Eisley’s songs is the ability to be happy and sad at the same time.
Second selection is Editors ( http://www.myspace.com/editorsmusic ) from the UK. There are few male vocalists who I really like, and this is one of them. Their sound is spacey alt/rock with a distinctive vocal, although their latest album has veered more toward new wave. A few of their newer songs sound straight out of the 80′s and even seem like there is some wow and flutter from the good ol’ cassette age thrown in. Songs I would recommend is The Racing Rats ( http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=20379382 ) and Papillon ( http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=63033690 ) If you are not into the keyboards in Papillon, there is an acoustic version from german mtv on youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rc1Pr3Y_QpU )
Digging the song from Enon, will have to further investigate
Ed Harcourt, Emer Kenny, Erik Satie, Esthero, Eva Cassidy, Expression Direkt, Evil Superstar, Emmylou Harris, Earth Crisis, Edith Piaf, 808 State, 88 Keys, Elysian Fields, Expansion Union, Eyedea and Abilities, The Emotions, Emma Christian, Esquivel, and…..(I don’t care what anybody says) EMF, En Vogue, Enigma…… that was just the tip of the iceberg.
=)
seriously…links…i forgot about the whole number thing…8 does start with e. good one
Mine is Elbow. It’s not something I’m gonna put on when I want something big and loud, but they have some really cool sounds and melodies that I love. Kinda snakey. It wakes up a corner of me that I don’t fully understand which is cool.
)
Here’s the song I like. An Audience with the pope.

Happy Christmas!! I’ll be gone for the next couple of letters. See u in 2010~
howdy folks… can someone please explain the rules (if there are any) beyond band must start with the current letter and that you must provide LINKS!!! Thanks.
this one is tough. i dont have much either. i won’t say elliot smith cos i already see you rolling your eyes to that.
empire of the sun- a duo from australia- very very similar to mgmt

tony’s people makes a cameo in this video
http://www.youtube.com/user/EmpireOfTheSunSound#p/u/12/a47Y1lCRHlM
hey djpj here are the rules….post no more than 2 artists and include a link to the song u want people to hear – myspace, youtube etc etc. list bands that start with that letter…ie elton john would be e not j. these artists are artists that are in ur itunes/library and bands that u really really love. feel free to ask a question if u dont have 2 artists cos i respond to every post. it might even make the videos more entertaining
thanx
So I often find myself listening to a lot of streaming radio channels and occasionally come across a few bands worth a further listen and a download. Fortunately for all of us, some of them started with “E”…
1) Eight Legs: When I first heard these guys I thought I was listening to a young Robert Smith:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTQci7NwjB4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTWwVTs3Tuo
http://www.myspace.com/eightlegs
2) Electrelane: Only one song in my library. Not sure if they are still around anymore but this song is still sticking around with me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlSfPmqiplY
here’s more to explore: http://www.myspace.com/electrelane
Cheers
Love this song by L.A. singer-songwriter Eleni Mandell “Dis-moi Au Revoir Encore” cos it’s so damn sexy and sultry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbwvQMq9YNc&feature=related
Here’s another song by her called “My Twin”… just cos I like twins =)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWkpCaeoIpA&feature=related
I didn’t have a lot of E’s either but I found a couple. I recently bought a great CD called Forwards (2004) by a UK band named The Egg. The song I’m recommending from them is Wall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9A1VCapzjE&NR=1 . They also have another song you might like called Venice Beach. If you like them check out their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/theeggmusic . They’re friends with Boards of Canada! My other E is a Japanese band called Ends started by Ryoichi Endo the ex-vocalist of a New Orderish group Soft Ballet which I’ll get to in the S’s. The song is from 1996 and its called Kumo to Hoshi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2nugPueDfU
c’mon fran… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_c1uazn0oc
Enter Shikari- Sorry You’re Not A Winner – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYss17285lY
Explosions In THe Sky- Yasmin the Light- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLRbriRAU9s
Well well well…on to the Es. I had a decent selection to choose from. I am ecstatic that Lola listed Elbow as they are in my top 5 of all time, so I don’t have to list them here.
So my suggestions are…
Elefant – Listen to “Annie demo” specifically. I’ve seen these guys twice live both times opening for BRMC. The singer is a good frontman…good live show.
http://www.myspace.com/elefant
Elyzium – This is my buddy and former flatmates project/band. Worth a listen….check out the song “Thin Thread”
http://www.myspace.com/elyzium
My first “E” artist is Eskimo Joe, a band out of Australia that an Aussie friend of mine got me into. Both these tracks have a pretty distinctive 80s sound. This first one “Black Fingernails, Red Wine” was their first Top 10 single… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVSGZEud00s&fmt=18. The next one is a track called “Beating Like A Drum” and sounds quite a bit like old INXS in my opinion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTqahdx229w
I know how you feel about singer songwriters, but I thought I’d throw one at you anyway. Emm Gryner has been making music for almost 15 years now and recording on her own label she started, Dead Daisy Records. I’ve been a HUGE supporter of hers for many years now. She’s very generous to her fans and remains one of the coolest and immensely talented people I’ve ever met. She plays guitar and piano, but mostly considers herself a “bass nerd”. She writes and performs her own songs, but has also collaborated with other artists like Ron Sexsmith, Lou Barlow, Nathan Larson of Shudder To Think, Holy Fuck, Def Leppard, members of the Cardigans, and even played keyboards and sang backup for David Bowie on his 1999 tour. She also frequently reworks other artist’s songs like Def Leppard, The Clash, Paul Westerberg, and Stone Temple Pilots. The first song I’m suggesting is her own song “Almighty Love”… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd-ctAqPCfg&fmt=18, which Bono from U2 named as one of the songs he wished he’d written. Next is a couple I couldn’t find a video of, but nonetheless I wanted to pass them along to you, just to show you this girl’s diversity. First is a cover of the song “Dearg Doom” by Irish band, Horslips… http://new.music.yahoo.com/emm-gryner/tracks/dearg-doom–20629389 …and to show you how brilliant this girl is, a complete reinterpreting of Ozzy Osbourne’s Crazy Train… http://new.music.yahoo.com/emm-gryner/tracks/crazy-train–175982989
Seriously, Easy E? LOL… My back-seat subwoofer lovin’ friends liked that stuff back at the beginning of the 90′s, and I guess it kinda grew on me, but I don’t think I could bring myself to give it any real props.. But okay, I’ll let it slide, as I guess you gave them points for historical significance.
Einstürzende Neubauten – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TssuSYrxVI&feature=related I never could get into them, but the music is decent.
Empire of the Sun – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RirFEbFvvcA I know they were mentioned already but I like this video. My friend sent me this link about 2 months ago, and I watched it over and over and over, just something cool about the music and video (It’s actually one video with two songs).
ELO. From one of the best albums ever – All over the world.

chalkmaze u sound like me – hey…seriously, slim pickins for e in my itunes library. it wasnt pretty but hey – he was relevant. whatchu got for me buddy
Please try not to copy me again. Thx.
Enigma….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5puvToReRr0 perfect for sex
also….want to give Elo a shout out for EG…..love that hit!
El-P. I’m much more a fan and intrigued by El-P’s beats than his actual rapping. He seems to come up with really interesting timing schemes but his raping is soooo dense that it can be a little claustrophobic.
“Deep Space 9mm”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leGgNfUAI7w
Extrawelt. Minimal techno. I’m not 100% on board with this band just yet. This song, “Must Attack” came on Pandora one day and I thought it had a cool title so I grabbed the record. The layering is pretty basic but that’s characteristic of minimal techno, I suppose.

It was good to see a recommendation for Eisley, one of my favorite bands. For “E” I selected a semi-obscure jazz artist, so it is not easy to make direct album-to-Web-site connections. I’m providing links to musical samples/MP3′s and links to videos so you can see how my recommended artist plays in various styles and methods. You’ll get an overview, and if you like his music, pursue.
Eberhard Weber is a German jazz bass player with a highly distinctive approach to the instrument. He plays a solid body electric upright 5-string bass, sort of a cross between a double bass and an electric bass guitar. Although capable of providing strong musical support in the traditional bass role, he is also a highly imaginative and melodic soloist, and the 5-string instrument gives him plenty of latitude. Weber has recorded for the European jazz label ECM since the early 1970′s, and he has worked with other prominent ECM artists including sax player Jan Garbarek and vibraphonist Gary Burton. Weber’s music fits perfectly with ECM’s trademark classically-influenced jazz style. In 1978 Weber released an album called “Silent Feet” with his group Colours, consisting of piano player Rainer Bruninghaus, woodwind man Charlie Mariano, and jazz-rock drummer John Marshall (who joined Colours after five years and six albums with Soft Machine). “Silent Feet” consists of three compositions: an opening number that is essentially a 17-minute introduction to the second and third numbers, both 12-minute tracks with very long intros. These guys like to take their time getting to the main theme, but it works because their ramblings and detours are so interesting! In addition to Weber’s musicianship, listen to all of the ensemble work, including the sax, flute, and piano solos and Marshall’s drum and percussion work (he was a heavy hitter with the Softs but plays with a defter touch here). The intro to Eyes That See in the Dark might sound weird, with mindwarp bass and plucked piano strings, but stick it out, because you will be rewarded with the main composition, featuring a fast-paced arrangement that sounds like a tribute to Dave Brubeck’s 50′s work. “Silent Feet” is a stunning album that deserves many listenings to catch all of the musical subtleties. *** Another Eberhard Weber album worth hearing is “Stages of a Long Journey,” a live career overview recorded in 2005 and released two years later, with orchestra and a variety of musicians, many from the ECM family. I recommend Syndrome featuring Burton, Bruninghaus, and Garbarek (listen to Weber driving the band during the piano and sax solos), Hang Around with Reto Weber (no relation) on a melodic percussion instrument called the hang and Nino G. the Human Beatbox, and Weber’s solo closing piece, Air.
The following links open the door to Weber’s music. MP3 availability is patchy for these albums (only Silent Feet is fully available on MP3, via CD Universe). However, these albums are worth the money to hear in full. Trust me.

Einsturzende Neubauten, Echo and the Bunnymen, Explosions in the Sky, Electric Six, Eleven, Esthero, Everything but the Girl. I still think it’s weird that you put Eno in ‘B’, but it’s your blog. XOS
ELLIOTT SMITH: a huge musical & emotional influence for me.
“EVERYTHING MEANS NOTHING TO ME” – simple, beautiful, soothing voice/harmonies & sad as hell.

ELLEN ALLIEN: Berlin’s techno/IDM/electro queen. (Frankie should be listening to this shit). She’s the real deal (also started her own label.) Check out the track “Turbo Dreams (Mark Houle Remix)” (a collaboration she did with another fav of mine, Apparat)

rofl @#25
No links now since we are past D.
So much for getting my E on early! Somehow my D’s got lost in submission. Oh well, Daft Punk was already on the list. Digital Underground (Dflo Shuttle) was my other. D Artist and Title 2x Bonus?
Interesting to hear the comments about Daft Punk/Dj-ing. I don’t know you very well, but it appeared to me that you are thumbing your nose at Daft Punk. With the majority of the commentary on the light show it’s hard to understand why Daft Punk isn’t your cup of tea. Sure they are a technology based band that is essentially doing mixing for a live show supplementing flashing lights to make up for the lack of instrument playing. Does it really matter how the music is produced (or in the case of the actor’s-band, who makes the music)? The only thing that matters is the resulting music.
If this is not the proper place to reply please disregard. Makes me wish there was a forum to compliment this blog. I’m sure we’d have all sorts of interesting observation/discussion.
Both of your submissions I insta-like. I haven’t heard any NWA or Easy-E.
I was hesitant about suggesting D-U. Old school rap lyrics can be sort of grating. But I find there is something, raw emotional, about any genre of music that is a bit ragged. Enon, just a good sound I’ve been on a female lead kick of late, finding that to be of the right flavor.
And FINALLY to my picks:
Mash together fast music, oompah beats of polka, rip some melodies from a famous song, sing in Finnish and you get Humppa! I present to you
Eläkeläiset-Humppaa Tai Kuole!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_FpYsO1K6M
I think it’s a riot. Sure some of their stuff is really bad (off key, off beat) but I find it hilarious.
To-mait-o, To-maat-o. You call it Neue Deutsche Härte, I’ll still call it Industrial.

yo this is the new battle of the jams. rather, expansion of the jams. extremely great.
Uh geeked out pretty hard on this one, but it seems like E is all about the vocal chords and people everyone know. I left out Elvis Costello (Alison) just because;
Sure a cover, but she’s got a cool voice, this happens to be my favorite.
Esther Phillips

Nice call with Enon – I’m liking that. Mine are:
Engineers: British psychedelic rock/shoegaze band. Heavy on the production. Smoke a bowl and enjoy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLgGTn-tqGg
.
Eels: not sure how the Eels didn’t get a mention yet. Most of the songs are more on the mellow side, but I went with one of the simpler but more rockin’ songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCgB871XKV8
missed the last two entries and i’m going to try to keep this short and sweet,
“Elastica”, i loved this band a lot and think they are still a really important electronic/punk rock band even though they only put out two albums.
of course everyone remembers this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzEfXU5Gsu0&feature=related
they really did a lot of experimental stuff in their records and more so live that a lot of people don’t know about, but they covered a very broad spectrum in their short career that i always thought was inspirational and awesome.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX0LoOeZFsk&feature=related
and i don’t give a shit what anyone says “Everclears” album Sparkle and Fade is one of the best rock albums ever put out and everyone already adores “Édith Piaf” but i’m not going to suggest the obvious, im going to suggest
“Emily Haines”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq-jEHZ-EFc
i think this awesomeness speaks for itself and don’t need to suggest anything else by her because it’s all extremely good, just click on any song.
The Exploding Hearts!

Someone already said it, but Explosions in the Sky always gives me chills. Your Hand in Mine – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36U4ez7AzKA
I’m really not a huge fan – but I always wanted to like brian eno because of the album title “music for airports” – to this day I don’t think I’ve listen to it though.
http://blog.roodo.com/blanchot/0357bcac.jpg
Yay! Other people who have heard of Explosions in the Sky!
While “Eazy-Duz-It” is clearly superb. My personal favorite is “No More ?’s”.
Verse One: Eazy-E
Ruthless, my style as a juvenile
Ran with a gang, slanged in the meanwhile
Bankin, I specialized in gankin
whites, Mexicans, brothers and others
Daily, it’s all about comin up
Makin sure no punks are runnin up
[Eazy E: Because I'm a gangster havin fun]
Strapped with a gat when I’m walkin through Compton
Terrible, I never listened to my mother
It went in one ear, and out the other
Ran my gang, sold undercover
Call a girl out a name, yo I ain’t no lover
I’m a pimp, mack daddy, lookin for the dollar
At thirteen I bought a six-fo’ Impala
Rollin, and runnin from the police
Brother don’t you know you can’t trust a thief
or thug, convict, hoodlum or criminal
Leave your car open, gank for your stereo
Hard and raw, no regard for the law
[Female: Eazy E, were you ever caught slipping?]
Hell no! Just trippin off 8-ball
And girls ain’t nothin but female dogs to me
Bitches! I’m sorry for that verse
It’s in my nature, I gotta curse
out anybody gettin on my nerves
You get beat, ganked, broke and served
So… you know who I am
and if you don’t like it, I really don’t give a damn
[Female: Hmm, I see, so you're rather violent?]
Sometimes
[Female: Ok, what would be the situation when you so-called "gank" somebody?]
Verse Two: Eazy-E
Wait… for some people to leave
I got another trick up my sleeve
Step with pep to the back of the house
Look then… all the lights are out
Grabbed the door and it’s locked, so
easily made my way to the window
Lift it up slow, cause it takes timing
Looked around, and then I climbed in
Once inside, I start takin
Cause you know it’s no time for shakin
Get what you gonna get, front and center
or get five years for breakin and enter
Move quickly, but no runnin
Shht, I think somebody’s comin
Hear the front door key, and I flee
out the back door with a fist full of jewelry
Over the wall… don’t fall
Wipe my sweat cause that was a close call
Gettin ganked by the E is a lesson
So… is there any more questions?
[Female: Yes, as a matter of fact, there is...
Have you ever been involved in, like, a armed robbery or a hold-up?]
You mean a 211?
[Female: Yeah]
Verse Three: Eazy-E
There’s a store, but don’t point
Walk inside, case the joint
One man behind the counter, another in the back
Go out to the car and load the gat
Grabbed the ski mask, here’s the task
Go in broke, come out with cash
[Female: Were you slick?]
Yeah, you gotta be cunnin
Told Ice Cube to leave the car runnin
Walked in, said: “This is a robbery”
Didn’t need the money, it’s just a hobby
Fill the bag, homeboy, don’t lag
I want money, beer, and a pack of zig-zags
The man in the back had a camera
so he came out to test his stamina
against Eazy E, but he took one
Fell to the floor, so I ran
back to the bucket, then I said: “Punch it”
Took the gun, and then dumped it
I’m not like Robin Hood, cause I want more
Steal from the rich, hang with the poor
My pockets are fat, you see, it don’t matter to me
I feel like nobody is badder than me
[Female: Is all that true ?]
I don’t lie
You see… I’m not mister nice guy
[Female: Oh, so you're not exactly a role model?]
Not exactly
[Female: And for your listeners, what does Eazy think of himself?]
Outro: Eazy-E
Bad and bold, you can’t get with this
Those that tried, you’re on my hit list
Can’t be caught, sought or fought
thought, and damn so what?
Down and dirty from the C-P-T
N-W-A and Eazy-E
One more, before we end this session
[Female: What's your real name?]
No more questions!
